Iuaulik—One Who Searches
Iuaulik is a traditional Alutiiq spirit mask, from Kodiak Island. He is known as “The One Who Searches” and is often paired with Unaxtulik, “The One Who Protects the Body” in masked performances. Collected by Alphonse Pinart in 1871-1872, an original carved wooden Iuaulik mask is housed at the Château Musée, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.

Iyak—One That is Hidden
This pointy-headed whistler mask is based on a Chugach Alutiiq mask taken from a Prince William Sound cave by the Alaska Commercial Company in 1875. For the Alutiiq, whistling is a means of spirit communication. Shamans often used whistling to call their helper spirits, as this mask represents. May your helper spirits guide you on your path. (See Looking Both Ways, p. 195). |

Ingilagiak—Clown
The Ingilagiak mask represents the “clown” helper spirit. Alutiiq traditionally performed a song and dance ritual calling on him to cast his gaze upon them in an effort to ensure a good hunt. May he protect you and keep you lighthearted in the face of challenges.

Labret
This Alutiiq helper spirit mask’s name is unknown. However, the labrets that it features make it stand out. Labrets are face jewelry, typically worn on the cheek, chin or lip. Humans have decorated their bodies in many ways since the dawn of time. May this little mask make you feel bedecked. |
